Hello Kitty

I got a kitten! It wasn't really a planned thing. I was out shopping with Kristina, and a friend of hers called and asked if she wanted a kitten. She asked me and I was like, "um...i dunno..." and she took that as a yes. We stopped by e-mart on the way home and picked up some food and a litter box, and that night I had a kitten! We decided on the name Hello. Get it?? Like Hello Kitty! haha Hello is sooooo tiny and cute. He meows alllll the time, even when he's eating. Not so fun when I'm trying to sleep, but I still love him.

Anyway, mud fest this weekend! It's supposed to rain:( We leave tonight at 11:00 and dont get back until sunday night. I hope Hello does ok being alone for the weekend.

I hope you've considered how you'll get the kitten home after your year in Korea is done.

Others have blogged about newbies getting cats/dogs and then dumping them cause they didn't consider the long term responsibilities....

Seriously, is it really okay to leave a kitten alone the weekend you get it???

I don't think that's very nice.

Please consider that you are now a kind of mother to this kitten.

That kitten is likely lonely and confused, and the first thing you do is leave it alone for an entire weekend? Not exactly great pet parentage, there.

Exactly.

I've known many great expat pet-owners in Korea who worked to care for not only their animals but others they've come across while in Korea.

But I've also known and dealt with far too many irresponsible people who buy an animal---or "rescue" an animal---only to turn around and dump it on someone else in 8 months. I can't tell you how many threads I've read on waygook.org or on local blogs about people who get a cat when they come to Korea and then two months later start asking around for someone to pet-sit while they go to SE Asia for five weeks.

I don't know you, and won't presume to judge you, but this sort of post doesn't reflect well on you or expat pet owners.

Well Girl,

I guess now you know people read your blog. When did she ever say she didn't plan to bring the kitten home, people?

Sherry,

She didn't have to. Anyone damn stupid enough to get a kitten and leave it on it's own the very first weekend has Korean style planning abilities-next to none.

You're welcome.

It's why i believe the blogosphere in Korea is stale. It's because the 'popular' bloggers are so bloody negative and are willing to write a post that's negative long before they will post/write something positive. Is it really what people want to hear? Doubt it.

How to travel with your pet when you leave korea:

http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/index.php?pageid=pet-travel

Also info on Animal Rescue about spaying/neutering your cat (100 000- 500 000 won depending on sex of cat and vet). Probably vet info there too

wow. sorry if u people think im an unfit cat mother or whatever. its not like i just went out and bought a cat. the guy i got the cat from was leaving korea, so who knows what would have happened to it if i didnt take it. i have no intentions of just dumping it when i leave. if for some reason i decide not to take it with me, i'll make sure it has a good home. i felt horrible leaving it for the weekend, but its been fine being home alone while im at work and i felt like it would do ok for the weekend..really only one full day (and it did). i realize that some of you still disagree with leaving it alone, but i dont appreciate being called stupid on my own site, especially when you're talking to my mom!
oh, thanks for the website..

Wow, all this outrage over a cat that you saved from death or becoming feral and having to scrounge around for food on its own out in the cruel world.

It's just too bad that all the children being abused or "orphaned" when they aren't truly orphans in this country doesn't merit a more vehement form of that outrage than actually taking in and caring for a cat does.
